Using Samsung Kies to Manage Your Samsung Device on Computer

While Samsung Kies (Key Intuitive Easy System) is the program which is developed by Samsung themselves, it isn’t as commonly used as the other options which are available.

For that reason alone, today we are going to focus on Samsung Kies and talk you through some of the different methods that it consists of, providing you a step-by-step breakdown along the way.

Our focus today will be data management, although Samsung Kies has a lot more to offer.

Part 1. Samsung Kies or Samsung Smart Switch?

Samsung Kies has a lot more to offer than simple data transfer features, including being able to backup and restore data, as well as updating the firmware on your device. However, while that’s the case, Samsung has begun to develop a new and improved version of Samsung Kies which serves a similar purpose.

This application is called “Samsung Smart Switch”. The program provides users with a much cleaner user interface as well as makes it a lot easier for users to transfer data from their old Samsung device, over to their new Samsung device.

While at first glance both Samsung Kies and Samsung Smart Switch may look like very similar programs, they are true that they are also very different and provide different sets of tools.

Part 2. How to Backup Samsung Device Using Samsung Kies

In this section, we are going to take a look at how you are able to successfully take a backup of your Samsung device using the Samsung Kies program.

Step #1 – If you haven’t already done so, make sure that the Samsung Kies program has been downloaded and is installed accordingly. Once installed, go ahead and launch the program.

After fulfilling each of these steps, you will be shown a display prompting you to disconnect your device which will also show you the different types of data that have been backed up.

With these simple steps, you are able to easily obtain a backup of your device’s data on your computer, which you can then use in the future in order to restore any data that you may lose.

Part 3. How to Transfer Data Between Samsung and PC Wirelessly

The next thing that we are going to look at which can be done with Samsung Kies is how you are able to use it in order to wireless transfer data between your Samsung device and your computer.

Step #1 – Make sure that you have downloaded and installed the Samsung Kies program and once you have it installed, go ahead and launch the program.

Step #2 – Upon launching the program, you will immediately notice that at the bottom of the program you are able to choose between “USB cable connection” and “Wireless connection”, the two available options.


Step #3 – Before moving on with Samsung Kies, the next few step requires you to use the device itself. On your Samsung device, tap on the “Settings” option, followed by “More Settings”, and finally tap on “Kies via Wi-Fi”.


Note: it’s important that for this process to work, both the computer that you are using and your Samsung device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Step #4 – Once you have tapped on the “Kies via Wi-Fi” option, Samsung Kies will immediately detect that your device has become available and will prompt you with a notification. Once the notification appears, click on the “Yes” button. A code may be required for a stable connection to be acquired.


After entering the code, a connection will be made between your device and your computer and you will then be able to transfer data between your device and your computer, as you see please, and in just a matter of minutes.


Part 4. How to Perform a Software Update Using Samsung Kies

The last method that we’re going to look at with Samsung Kies is how you are able to perform a software update with it.

Step #1 – Make sure that you have downloaded and installed the Samsung Kies program accordingly. Launch the program once it has been installed.

Step #2 – If you haven’t done so already, go ahead and connect your Samsung device to your computer using a USB computer. You will be notified by Samsung Kies once it has detected your device.

Step #3 – On the program, click on your device’s name which will be located on the left panel, followed by clicking on the “Basic information” tab, and lastly clicking on the “Firmware upgrade” option.


Step #4 – Before you can continue, you must check the box next to the “I have read all of the above information” box. When you are ready to begin, click on the “Start upgrade” button.


Step #5 – The program will then begin to download all of the tools which it needs to successfully perform this topic.


Note: it’s incredibly important that during this process, you do not disconnect your Samsung device from your computer for any reason at all.

Step #6 – You can track the download using the progress bar, and once the download and installation are complete, click on the “Ok” button to complete the process.
Opting to update your firmware using your Samsung device isn’t always preferable for many different reasons, which is why using Samsung Kies to do so may be in your best interests.

Lastly, we’re going to look at an alternative program that can be used rather than using the standard Samsung Kies program. Dr.Fone – Android Data Backup & Restore is a data management program that has a lot more to offer, although for now, we are going to focus on how you can use it in order to create a backup of the data that is stored on your device.

Step #1 – Head over to the Dr.Fone website and download the program. Once you have it downloaded, install it accordingly and launch it.

Step #2 – After you have the program launched, From here, click on the “Phone Backup” option.


Step #3 – You will then be taken to a menu where you are able to select the data types that you’d like to have backed up. Once you have selected each type of data that you want to back up, click on the “Backup” button located at the bottom right of the program.

Step #4 – The process will then begin and you will be able to track the process of the backup as it is taken.

Step #5 – Once the backup has finished, you will then be able to view the backup along with all of the other backups that you have taken with the use of Dr.Fone.
